In the clip, Judy waits in line at the ice cream parlor as the elephant doles out massive servings of ice cream to customers. Happy with her success, Judy treats herself to an ice cream at the local elephant ice cream parlor - and that's where we pick up the story in the exclusive clip previewed for the audience at D23 on Friday. Ever an optimist, she decides she'll be the best meter maid ever, and moves quickly around the city giving ridiculous numbers of tickets all day. But being so small, they only let her do parking duty. Only bigger, stronger animals like hippos and elephants are cops, but Judy's mantra is "anyone can be anything," so of course she makes it. Judy is a little rabbit who moved to the big city in hopes of becoming police officer. The lead character in Zootopia is Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin.

Some of the logic of its ideal world is open to debate but the film is fun, and food for thought, and that's quite a treat.Zootopia has parks and neighborhoods for all kinds of different animal types, including Tundra Town for cold weather creatures, a Rain Forest District full of trees where blimps move through the warm, wet canopy, and the Bunny Burrows with buildings full of rabbits - more and more rabbits every second, in fact, as the population sign makes clear with the numbers spinning higher and higher. In tackling these matters in an anthropomorphic framework, Zootopia has set itself quite a task but embraces the challenges inventively.

The movie reflects on issues of diversity, the language of condescension and the consequences of stereotyping.

Even the priceless scene involving slow-moving sloths at a motor registration office could be accused of succumbing to what it seeks to question, but the filmmakers have a neat way of returning to this issue in the movie. Trying to undercut stereotyping in a comic fashion has potential pitfalls. The pop culture references in the movie never feel gratuitous or condescending, and the deeper resonances of the film are not reduced to a slogan – although an uplifting song by Zootopia's favourite pop idol, Gazelle (Shakira) tends in that direction. There's a certain amount of separation by size and habitat within the city, it turns out. The plot and visual imagery references crime thrillers such as The Godfather and Chinatown, but other scenes have their own inventive momentum, such as a chase sequence through the different environments of Zootopia in which Judy is one minute a Lilliputian in the land of giants, the next a monster in a suburb of tiny rodents, stomping through the streets like Godzilla. Goodwin and Bateman bring wit and warmth to their characters and their relationship is well developed within a deftly-constructed thriller plot.

A surfeit of writing credits is often the sign of incoherence, of a film that seems cobbled together to cater to various audiences, but Zootopia doesn't come across that way. Zootopia is directed by Byron Howard ( Tangled) and Rich Moore ( Wreck-it Ralph) and co-directed by Jared Bush they are also among the eight names listed as writers. And Nick Wilde, it turns out, has the clue she needs to get started.Īs this fox-and-rabbit odd-couple duo embarks on a noir-inflected adventure, the movie takes some intriguing, entertaining turns. Then, desperate to be taken seriously and solve a case, she accepts Chief Bogo's ultimatum: find a missing otter within 48 hours, or hand in her badge. While handing out tickets, she crosses paths with a sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Devastated to be put on parking duty by buffalo Chief Bogo (Idris Elba), she throws herself into the job nevertheless. Yet, it turns out, there's trouble in paradise: the diminutive Officer Hopps is not taken seriously in the macho, large-mammal world of the Zootopia police force. There's an exhilarating sequence showing her arrival in the big city, overawed by the volume, scale and intensity of the place. Where, she is led to believe, anyone can be anything.
